Setting up a dial up networking connection

Using - CHAP login
Windows NT comes with Internet access software and can be set up to use a Pinnacle account, connecting via a modem or ISDN. Please note that although the information supplied here is believed to be correct, this software is provided by Microsoft Inc and any faults relating to this dial software is not a responsibility of Pinnacle. If your machine is connected to a local area network, check with the system administrator before continuing with these instructions.

Configuration
- The following explains how to set up Windows NT to use a Pinnacle account. It is taken from user reports and has been used successfully by us.
Essential components
- Pinnacle Dial-Up Account Details
- Windows NT V4.0 workstation or server installation CD-ROM
- Correctly installed modem or ISDN terminal adapter
First Steps - the infrastructure. Ensure that that Dial-Up Networking has been installed.
- Double click My Computer
- Double click the Dial-Up Networking icon and click Install to start the installation. If Dial-Up Networking is already installed you can move on to the Setting up a dial up connection paragraph
- You will be prompted to insert the installation CD-ROM to copy the necessary files.
- When complete, a prompt will appear to add a RAS device (modem) if none are already installed
- Click Yes
- Windows NT will then try and automatically detect your modem
- Follow the prompts to complete modem installation. When complete an Add RAS Device window will appear, choose the correct adapter from the RAS capable devices drop down box
- Click Configure and choose Dial out only
- Click Network and choose TCP/IP, all other protocols can be unchecked
- Then click Continue on the Remote Access Set-up box if no network protocols are installed choose TCP/IP and click Continue again.
- Windows NT will then install TCP/IP Support
- Finally you will be prompted to restart the machine
If you are not prompted for this information then you can manually add the components:
- Click on the Network icon in Control Panel
- Click the Services tab
- Highlight Remote Access Service
- Click Add...
- Add Remote Access Service
- When complete a prompt will appear to add a RAS device (modem) if none are already installed
- Click Yes
- Windows NT will then try and automatically detect your modem
- Follow the prompts to complete modem installation
- If no network protocols are available Windows NT will prompt you to add one, select TCP/IP and click continue
- Windows NT will then install TCP/IP Support
- Finally you may be prompted to restart the machine
To manually add another modem, click Add.. on the Remote Access Set-up and then choose Install Modem... or use the Modems icon in the Control Panel
Setting up a dial up connection
- Double click My Computer
- Double click the Dial-Up Networking icon
- The New Phonebook Entry Wizard box will appear
- Choose a name Pinnacle, click Next
- Check I am calling the Internet
- Uncheck Send my plain text password if that's the only way to connect
- Uncheck The non-Windows NT server I am calling expects me to type login information after connecting, or to know TCP/IP addresses before dialling
- Click Next
- Use the corresponding Point of Presence telephone number 0845 079 8774
- Click Next
- Click Finish and then Dial-Up Networking window will appear
Setting the TCP/IP Properties
- Open the My Computer icon from the desktop
- Double click the Dial-Up Networking icon
- Select Pinnacle from the Phonebook entry to dial: drop down menu and click More then select Edit entry and modem properties
- Click the Basic tab
- Click Configure - Set the Initial Speed to 115200
- Check Enable hardware flow control
- Check Enable modem error control
- Check Enable modem error compression
- Click the Server tab
- Uncheck Enable software compression
- In the Network protocols:
- Check TCP/IP
- Uncheck IPX/SPX Compatible
- Uncheck NetBEUI
- Then click TCP/IP Settings...
- Check Server assigned IP addresses
- Check Server assigned name server addresses
- Check Use IP header compression
- Check Use Default Gateway on Remote Network Note: important check
- Click OK
- Check Enable software compression
- Uncheck Enable PPP LCP extensions
- Click OK to finish the edits
Using your Dial Up Connection
- Open the My Computer icon from the desktop
- Double click the Dial-Up Networking icon
- Select the correct entry from the Phonebook entry to dial: drop down menu
- Ensure the telephone number is correct
- Click Dial
- A Connect to Pinnacle window will appear, in the User Name box, type your login id e.g.UKPNN/pnnab76. Please note the characters here and whether they are upper or lower case. This is important and is often a cause for the connection not being made. The first 4 characters are always upper case UKPNN, there then follows a / and then a 7 letter code starting with pnn but in lower case e.g.pnnab76).
- In the Password box, enter your Pinnacle Dial-Up/Connection password ( not always the same as your email password).
- Ignore the Domain field if blank or remove any default entry
- Click OK
- The Connect Complete box will appear, stating:
"You have successfully connected to the remote server. You may now use the usual Windows NT programs and utilities as if you were directly connected to the network."
Right-click the Dial-Up Networking Monitor on the task bar to hang up or check the status of your connection. The 'Close on dial' option hides the phonebook while dialling and closes it as soon as you connect. - You can now run WINSOCK compatible programs, such as Internet Explorer
- To break the connection click on the right click on the Dial-Up Networking Monitor in the TaskBar and choose Hang up - Pinnacle
Trouble Shooting
- The first place to visit when trouble shooting Dial-Up Networking is the Microsoft Knowledge Base where you can search for information on any Microsoft product.
- Service Packs can help certain problems with networking and NT in general, read the documentation carefully, Microsoft Service Packs
- After you install Service Pack 2 for Windows NT 4.0, you may not be able to ping or otherwise make use of the connection you have established with an ISP when using RAS to dial out. Read this Microsoft Knowledge Base document, Q161368 Note Service Pack 3 is now available.
- Multiple ISP connections - multiple connections should be possible by creating additional connections in the Dial-Up Networking icon and completing the relevant telephone numbers and server settings
- To stop the line error sound alerts, Open the Dial-Up Networking Monitor, Click the Preferences tab and Uncheck When a line error occurs
- If any protocol related connection errors occur, open Networking icon in the Control Panel, and click the Bindings tab. Check that Remote Access Service is bound to WINS Client(TCP/IP) which is then bound to the Remote Access WAN Wrapper
- The default TCP/IP Properties should be sufficient in most cases. You can enter Pinnacle Dial network settings directly connection:
- Open the My Computer icon from the desktop
- Double click the Dial-Up Networking icon
- Select Pinnacle from the Phonebook entry to dial: drop down menu and click More then select Edit entry and modem properties
- Click the Server tab
- Then click TCP/IP Settings...
- Check Specify name server addresses
- In the primary DNS enter 195.224.180.227
- In the secondary DNS enter 195.224.198.62
- The default modem settings should be sufficient in most cases, however you may wish to check the following points in the Modems icon in the Control Panel.
- Click the Properties button
- Click the Connection tab
- Check to make sure your details match these details
Data bits: 8
Parity: None
Stop bits: 1
- Click Advanced
- Check Use flow control
- Check Hardware (RTS/CTS)
